Rosenior: ‘We made key errors in key moments’

Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior dissected the match with TNT Sports: “I felt we were the more dominant team from minute one to the end of the game. To lose this game was extremely disappointing. We had many opportunities to win this game.

“Extremely frustrating,” he said, referring on Wesley Fofana temporarily being off the pitch when Matheus Cunha scored. “That was their only shot on target.”

“It feels like any mistake at the moment is ending up in the back of our net, and that has to change.

“It has been a difficult spell [in charge]. We are making key errors in key moments. We aren’t taking advantage of chances we have created. We won’t win games of football [at this rate].

“We have to go to Brighton and put things right. We created many chances today. It is not about the creation of the chances, but the taking of them.

“Today, the dominant team from the first minute switched off for a moment, and then went behind.

“We just need to win the next game. We have to focus on ourselves. We have to be in bright and early tomorrow morning to put things right.”

Carrick: ‘The boys put in a massive performance tonight’

United manager Michael Carrick caught up with TNT Sports: “I can’t play that down; that is a big win for us. I thought they had opportunities [to score], but to keep a clean sheet and defend like we did, it was just great.

“I thought Ayden [Heaven] and Nous[sair Mazraoui] coming in was just incredible. Ayden is so young, and Nous was playing out of position. Have to give a lot of credit to the coaching staff and the players for taking it on board.

“Thought the boys put in a massive performance tonight. I think we can play better. It is good to build some momentum, and we have some great players, and want to keep improving.

“His [Bruno Fernandes] impact has been immense. He has carried it all the way through. He plays most games and stays fit. He is hungry, and he had a big shift to do today.

“He is obviously a big personality and captain for a reason. He leads by example. He is vocal and a big presence on the pitch. He is a big part of this club over the last few years.

“Coming here, we haven’t had a great [recent] record, but records are made to be broken. It is a tough league. There are a lot of teams beating everybody, so [it’s] important to get perspective on that.

“It was a big win for us, but we don’t want to look behind. We understand what it means, but we want to keep improving. Hopefully, the supporters are enjoying it.”

Fernandes: ‘We needed to make a great performance today’

United’s Bruno Fernandes has been awarded player of the match for providing his league-leading 18th assist for the Cunha goal.

He spoke with TNT Sports after the match: “It is an amazing feeling for us. We had to bounce back after [the 1-2] Leeds [result]. We needed to make a great performance today.

“Chelsea are a very good side. They are the closest one to the top five [places], so we needed to create some distance.

“I always want to do better than the season before. I want to improve my entire game overall. I want to end my career as the best player possible.

“Great performance from everyone, the five at the back with Senne [Lammens]. Diogo [Dalot] and [Luke] Shaw were really good in their duels. Cas[emiro] and Kobbie [Mainoo] were brilliant as well.

“I feel three points closer [to Champions League football next season], but that is it. We know we need points to get that place secured, and want to do it as quickly as possible.”

United earn huge result away at Chelsea

United take three vital points at Stamford Bridge to further strengthen their ambitions of European football next season.

It is only the second time they have kept a clean sheet away from home. Despite Chelsea dominating the match statistics, it was United who were more clinical in front of the net.

Chelsea had four opportunities to score, but were either off the mark or denied by the woodwork.

It is a crushing result for Chelsea, who are now four points adrift off fifth-placed Liverpool.

    Chelsea earn late free kick

This could be the final opportunity for the hosts to square this match once and for all.

It comes off a handball by Mount on the right edge of the box. Neto sends it into the box, but it is headed away by Casemiro.

Chelsea regain possession before Mainoo commits a foul on the left flank to afford the hosts another free-kick chance.

    More changes at the Bridge

Chelsea’s Fernandez looks to have hurt himself as he lies on his back by the upright. Rosenior senses a change is required, and mobilises Romeo Lavia off the bench.

Carrick utilises the time to sub on Joshua Zirkzee, with Mbeumo coming off.

    Caicedo inches wide!

Chelsea continue their search for an equaliser.
