Kacey Musgraves Returns, Cheeky as Ever
Kacey Musgraves is back with her latest single, “Dry Spell.” Our critic Jon Caramanica explains how the song’s double entendres and parched guitar signal a return to form for the country star.
Mother’s back. So the new Kacey Musgraves song is called “Dry Spell.” I like it so much, because it takes me back to the version of Kacey that I really first fell for a decade ago. For a few years, Kacey was Nashville’s favorite heretic, and then over the last couple of albums, I’m thinking “Star-Crossed” and “Deeper Well,” she was going on something of a vision quest. And a little bit of that humorous, genteel spark that I think was present in so much of her early music, seemed to go by the wayside. On “Dry Spell,” we are back. This is a song full of horny double entendres. Kacey letting you know that it’s been a while. “Dry Spell” is written with a hall of fame lineup of songwriters. I’m talking Luke Laird, Josh Osborne, Shane McAnally. The song succeeds in a few different ways. Lyrically — very funny. Also, I like the production on it quite a bit. There’s this incredibly dry, parched guitar, maybe just like a faint bit of Bakersfield country rock in there. It’s almost panting and desperate. It’s calling out and saying, “Please, please, play me.” So “Dry Spell” also reminds me of my favorite Kacey Musgraves song of all time. It’s a YouTube recording of a radio performance she gave like 15 years ago of a song called “It Is What It Is.” It is funny, desperate and wry. I feel like you should have it a — cheesy like ’60s talking interlude here being like, “Baby, I’m wearing something real silky.” It’s a fascinating moment for Kacey to come back in this manner, specifically. All around our young country stars who are taking the old Musgraves playbook and putting it near the top of the Billboard charts. I’m talking about Ella Langley. I’m talking about Megan Moroney, and Kacey coming back like mom to check in on the kids. What’s the lesson here? Take your car out of the lot. Go for a spin. It’s beautiful outside. Sometimes you got to shed off all that old mess and go back to the beginning.
